Quiz Meet Stats
Bible Quizzing News – Two-on-Two-on-Two Tournament
We held a special tournament on February 2nd, 2013 and some of you participated with our quizzers! Along with nineteen of our regular zone quizzers were Nick Murgia, Penny Benedict, Matt Stout, Geoff Lloyd, Danny Carsten, Ben Carsten, Jessica Estey, Karen O’Brien-Mazza, Dan Obrien-Mazza Sr., Marie Murgia and Heidi Southwick.
We split up into teams of two and had three rounds of preliminaries. After the preliminaries, Jon Calderon, Nick Murgia, Austin Chapman and visiting participant Penny Benedict (Jessica Estey’s mom) were all in first place with perfect scores of 270. Geoff, Danny, Ben and Jessica all ended up in the middle of the pack, beating out many of our regulars. Marie had a rough preliminary round, but came to life in the Championship Round and helped her teammate and son, Nick to make it to the Championship Game.
Joining Nick and Marie in the Championship Round were Joel Fleming and Ben Carsten; and Jon Calderon and Chris Lloyd. The game was highly contested, with Joel and Ben jumping out to an early lead. Jon and Chris came from behind to tie them on the last question. So we went to overtime with just one question to decide the championship. Both Joel and Jon had quizzed out for their team and that left Ben against Chris. Chris got the jump and got the question right making Jon and Chris the tournament champions!
We ended with a trophy presentation to the top three teams. Just think, you could be a part of this exciting tournament next year!

December 2010 Quiz Meet
The December quiz was exciting! Not only was every quizzer able to answer at least one question, but we also had our Christmas party after the quiz Joel Fleming was top quizzer of the day and holds first for the year. Chris Lloyd did extremely well coming in 2nd for the day and holds 2nd for the year Elijah Southwick had a stellar day coming in 3rd and continues to hold 4th for the year, Isaac Donath and Sam Lloyd tied for 4th for the day and Isaac hold 5th for the year. JuanCarlos Calderon and Faith Murgia tied for 6th for the day. Amanda Negley was not able to be at the quiz, but she still holds 3rd place in the yearly stats.
The team stats are the Commanders in1st with 147 points, Joel’s Team with 113 points and the Israelites of LaFayette with 85 points.
After the quiz we all had a great time sharing food and fun, with the white elephant gift exchange. The quizzers have been striving to understand God’s word as they study it. Please pray for God’s blessing to be upon them in this endeavor. It is such an exciting journey working with these children and I thank the Lord for this opportunity!
Our December Quiz Meet was a lot of fun and challenging for our quizzers. A group of about ten Nazarene style quizzers joined up for the day. We scrambled up the teams with members from both competing together. Each quizzer quizzed six times, three times in each style. Even though most of my quizzers weren’t familiar with Nazarene quizzing they did great and enjoyed the challenge.
Almost every quizzer increased their average after this quiz meet. Nick Murgia remains in first place with Sam Benedict close behind. Here’s the rest in order: Caleb Benedict, Noah Schadt, Karyn Donath, Andrew Southwick (Syr.), Beca Lloyd, Aaron Fleming, Lydia Calderon, Taylor Fleming, Sommer Wagner, Heidi Southwick (Syr.), Hope Murgia and Sarah Wagner.
January 15th and 16th is Winter Nationals. Nine quizzers and four coaches travel to Sacandaga Bible Camp to compete against quizzers from our district, NY Metro, Michigan, and Canada. The kids really enjoy this time and it is a great experience to quiz against International level quizzers.
Please keep us in your prayers.
November 2010 Quiz Meet

The 2nd place team was the Commanders with Chris in 4th place and Elijah in 5th place. Juan Carlos also was able to answer a question earning a third person bonus for the team. Joel’s Team came in third and Joel was the 1st place quizzer for the day.
After the quiz the cumulative totals are:
Individual starting with first place – Joel, Chris, Amanda, Elijah, Isacc, Sam, Juan Carlos, and Faith
Teams starting with first place – Commanders, Joel’s Team, Israelites
Please continue to keep us in prayer. Our December quiz is at the Syracuse Alliance on December 11. Stop by and encourage the quizzers.
Our November Quiz Meet was a special tournament. We invited former quizzers, new quizzers and then our regulars to compete. Regular quizzers were paired up with new quizzers. We had four rounds of preliminaries and then the teams were placed in order by their scores. Top team after preliminaries was Caleb Benedict and his mom, Penny (new quizzer). Second place went to Eli Thompson (former quizzer) and Andrew Southwick (Syracuse). In third place was Sam Benedict and his sister, Jessica Estey (new quizzer). Fourth place went to Taylor Fleming and Jon Calderon (former quizzer). In fifth place was Nick Murgia and Heidi Southwick (Syracuse). Other teams, in order of finish were Aaron Fleming and Ben Carsten (new quizzer), Noah Schadt and Sommer Wagner, Matt Stout (former quizzer and Sarah Wagner, Dan Obien-Mazza (former) and Eric Hertel (former), Beca Lloyd and Lydia’s cousin Amanda (new), Lydia Calderon, who quizzed alone because her partner couldn’t make it, and Hope Murgia and her cousin Anna Murgia (new).
Following preliminaries were five addition rounds to get us to the championship game. Eli and Andrew battled Sam and Jessica, and Caleb and Penny for top team for the day. It was an exciting match being decided on the last question with Eli and Andrew taking first place and Caleb and Penny just behind them. Each person in the final quiz received a trophy.
Individual honors went to Penny Benedict top new quizzer, Matt Stout top returning quizzer, and Sam Benedict top current quizzer. Each one received a free movie ticket.
Other highlights from the day were Ben Carsten coming in second place among new quizzers, Jon Calderon just missing first among returning quizzers and Nick Murgia coming in a close second among current quizzers. Sarah Wagner answered one question, but it was answered on the last question that won the quiz for her team. Hope Murgia had a stellar day accumulating 100 points. A special thank you to Larry Petry who came out to run stats for us!
All the quizzers had a blast and want to do another tournament in February. If you’ve ever thought you’d like to try it, let me know and join us in February.
This month we are studying John chapters 9 – 11. Please pray for our quizzers that the Word they study is applied to their lives! We will have Nazarene quizzers from the Buffalo area coming to quiz with us at our December meet. They have a different style of quizzing with the question format wordier and only two teams quiz against each other. We are going to quiz in both styles so it will be a new experience for most of our quizzers. Following the meet we’ll have pizza and a Christmas Party with a white elephant gift exchange. The following weekend we plan to go as a group to the new Chronicles of Narnia movie, Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
October 2010 Quiz Meet
Our second quiz of the year was at the Syracuse Alliance Church on Saturday October 16, 2010. It was a good a day and it was a bad day for some. The Commander’s team had a very good day. Chris Lloyd scored 240 points taking first place for the day. Elijah Southwick scored 140, taking third place. The team with Chris, Elijah and new quizzer Juan-Carlos Calderon came in first place.
The Israelites of LaFayette had a bad day. The quizzers either had a lot of errors or where not able to get a jump. Keep them in prayer for a better quiz next month.
The top five quizzers for the day were Chris Lloyd, Joel Fleming, Elijah Southwick, Isaac Donath and Sam Lloyd.
Keep the quizzers and coaches in prayer for more diligence in their studies and evidence of their growth in the word.
We had another exciting quiz meet on October 16th, quizzing on material from John 4, 5, and 6 through verse 29. Unfortunately three of our quizzers were unable to attend. We missed Sommer Wagner, Sarah Wagner and Noah Schadt. This left each of their three teams with only two team members. But those left fought valiantly to show off all that they had studied. Every quizzer got at least one question right.
Nick Murgia was top quizzer, with Sam Benedict close behind. Nick is at the top of the leader board with Sam Benedict, Karyn Donath, Noah Schadt, Andrew Southwick, Caleb Benedict, Beca Lloyd, and Lydia Calderon all quizzing at a high level. Heidi Southwick, Taylor Fleming, Aaron Fleming and Hope Murgia round out the top 12.
Nick’s team took top team for the day, with Beca Lloyd’s team and Sam’s team tied for second.

We have six senior quizzers representing us at Districts May 1st. In order of their finish, they are: Nick Murgia, Sam Benedict, Caleb Benedict, Noah Schadt, Aaron Fleming, and Taylor Fleming. Please pray for them as they prepare for Districts.
February 2010 Quiz Meet
There is quite a battle going on for first place. Last month Beca Lloyd led by 10 points and now Joel Fleming has regained the lead by 10 points. That 20 point swing is just one question more answered for Joel than Beca this month. It will be interesting to see who will end up on top after our final quiz this month. Amanda Negley has moved up from fifth place into fourth place and is nipping at Chris Lloyd’s heals for third place. Four of the five to go to Districts will be from our church!
The Seniors had a very good quiz day. Going into the day Borne Supremacy’s team (Nick, Nate, Aaron) was in the lead by six points. At the end of the day, Unknown Flock of Oxen (Sam, Noah, Karyn Hope) led by six points. That wasn’t the only jostling for position that was going on. Noah Schadt had a great quiz day, tying Nick in the morning session for 1st place and then winning the top twelve quiz outright. Top five finishers were Noah Schadt, Nick Murgia, Sam Benedict, Caleb Benedict and Heidi Southwick (Syr). Noah also moved from sixth place into fourth place in the overall standings. Right now LaFayette holds the first six places. All five quizzers to represent our zone at Districts will come from our church. This is a first! We have just two quizzes left, both this month. March Madness Scramble, March 19 & 20 and our zone quiz on March 27th at Syracuse Alliaince.
January 2010 Quiz Meet
The junior quizzers had quite a quiz day. Both Beca and Chris Lloyd were on a roll with Beca earning 250 points, bringing her into first place. Chris earned 230 points bringing him up to third place. Joel Fleming had a rough first quiz but came back in the next two quizzes and ends up in 2nd place. Amanda Negley continues to hold fifth place, making four of the top five quizzers from our teams. Check the newsletter next month for more details.
Seniors had a great day, especially Nick, Sam, Caleb and Noah. Noah moved from seventh place up to sixth. He quizzed out a couple of times and ended up in third place in the Top Twelve quizzes. Nick and Sam tied for first place in the morning quizzes, and Nick edged out Sam in the Top Twelve. Caleb continues to improve each month, and holds third overall. It was a fun day, with very few errors and high scores by most teams.
December 2009 Quiz Meet
Beca and Joel both had a daily score of 260 making it a tie for the day. Amanda came in 4th for the day. Chris was in 6th and Faith had a slower day, but still encouraged her team. See the Lamplighter for information about our Christmas party.
On December 19th we had a Zone Meet at our church. We had Amherst Nazarene quizzers visiting with us again. To make it more fun for our visitors we scrambled up all the teams and had a fun time quizzing with new teammates. Our top five for the day were Nick Murgia, Jeremy Southwick (Syr.), Sam Braun (Amherst), Noah Schadt and Caleb Benedict.
November 2009 Quiz Meet
Our November quiz, on the 21st, was held here at LaFayette Alliance. Wow! What a quiz. Joel ran away with 1st. He memorized all the material and it showed. He quizzed out very early in all quizzes. Amanda Negley showed how well she studied and tied Beca Lloyd for 2nd of the day bringing her into 5th place in her personal stats. Beca is close behind Joel in 2nd place. With so many well versed quizzers, it is sometimes hard for newer quizzers to get a jump; but Chris was able to get at least one in every quiz. Faith is still mastering the jump but correctly answered her bonus question which helped her team.
Our third quiz was held November 21st. Our top quizzers worked hard to maintain their spots, but Caleb Benedict had a stellar day and moved up to 5th place overall and took 1st place in our top 15 quizzes. Nick Murgia continues to maintain 1st place overall.
October 2009 Quiz Meet
Our October quiz, on the 24th, was held at Syracuse Alliance. We had an extra quizzer who joined Joel and Amanda’s team giving them an equal number of quizzers as the rest of the teams. Their team took 1st place with Joel and Amanda keeping their present personal stat spots of 1st and 6th respectively. Our other team, “God’s Colorful Creation”, moved into 2nd with Beca keeping her 2nd place status. Chris moved into 4th and Faith stayed in 7th. Over all we had a lot of fun.
Our second quiz meet was held the end of October. We had two visiting teams competing with us from Amherst and Lowville. They enjoyed it so much they are coming back for our December quiz. They said that the level of competition they experienced with us is higher than at any other quiz meet they’ve competed in. We were very honored.
